Thinking, Fast and Slow
Daniel Kahneman — 2011
The Golden Quote
"Nothing in life is as important as you think it is, while you are thinking about it."
Main Actionable Insight
System 1 (fast, automatic, emotional) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, rational) are not rivals — System 2 is the lazy editor of System 1's outputs. The danger is not that we use intuition, but that we don't notice when our intuition has been hijacked by biases.
What I Changed in My Life
I introduced a 'pre-mortem' practice before major projects — imagining the project has failed a year from now and working backward to identify causes. It has surfaced risks I would have never seen with forward thinking.
The lasting lesson
Most of what I thought was careful deliberation was actually post-hoc rationalization of System 1 snap judgments. Recognizing this is uncomfortable. It’s also essential.
The book doesn’t make you immune to bias. It makes you aware, which is the prerequisite for everything else.
